Dating Techniques

Dibble knew our species had been there more than 50, years ago—beyond the practical limit of radiocarbon dating. So he recruited two dating aces from the University of Wollongong in Australia, Zenobia Jacobs and Richard Roberts, experts in the technique of optically stimulated luminescence OSL dating. That method determines how long buried sand grains have been hidden from sunlight and can peer back , or more years in time. Read the whole story: Science. Your email address will not be published. Optically stimulated luminescence OSL ages can determine a wide range of geological events or processes, such as the timing of sediment deposition, the exposure duration of a rock surface, or the cooling rate of bedrock. The accuracy of OSL dating critically depends on our capability to describe the growth and decay of laboratory-regenerated luminescence signals.

Here we review a selection of common models describing the response of infrared stimulated luminescence IRSL of feldspar to constant radiation and temperature as administered in the laboratory. We use this opportunity to introduce a general-order kinetic model that successfully captures the behaviour of different materials and experimental conditions with a minimum of model parameters, and thus appears suitable for future application and validation in natural environments.

Kimberley rock art dating project

Member institutions are well positioned to provide world-class expertise and facilities in a variety of isotopic, radionuclide and biogeochemical methods of analyses to study the archaeological history, climate, and environmental and geomorphic evolution of the region. The Kimberley region of northwest Australia contains an extraordinarily rich record of rock art of various styles, providing an important window into the culture, beliefs and everyday life of the first Australians.

Dating the rock art is complex and difficult to integrate with the emerging Late Quaternary and Holocene archaeological records.

Nathan R. Jankowski at University of Wollongong The latter is important in OSL dating, where pre-, syn- and post-depositional processes can.

Prof Andy Gleadow is confident that a multi-disciplinary approach using a combination of dating technologies and analysis of very large data sets will change our understanding of Australian Aboriginal rock art found in shelters and its relationship to an evolving landscape. The Kimberley Rock Art project involves a large team of researchers with complementary specialties from multiple institutions University of Western Australia , Universities of Wollongong , Melbourne and Manchester , including ANSTO dating specialists, who are working together with the Indigenous Traditional Owners to obtain a chronology for the extraordinary rock art sequence of the Kimberley.

Gleadow said that the Kimberley rock art sequence is characterised by tremendous artistic skill, great abundance and a diversity of painting styles that occur in a relative time sequence that may well span the past 50, years—since the arrival of first Australians. Frequently a particular painting style is superimposed over an earlier painting.

You cannot separate the art from the rock surface upon which it is painted nor from the landscape where art is found within rock shelters. Establishing chronologies for the rock art has proved extraordinarily challenging, because most pigments lack constituents that can be dated with well known and accepted methods, such as radiocarbon or uranium series isotopes—not to mention the vast distances and remoteness of sites where the rock art is found.

Most of the intense Kimberley work has been done in areas around the Drysdale River, King George River and along the coast around Doubtful Bay that contain ancient sandstone escarpments that appear to be optimum surfaces for rock art application. The sites are so remote that access is usually by helicopter. The methods, which have produced hundreds of dates, include cosmogenic radionuclides to date rock art shelter formation and rates of landscape evolution processes; radiocarbon dating of organic constituents within mud wasp nests and oxalate mineral layers; optically stimulated luminescence OSL dating of large wasp nest complexes, and uranium-series dating of particular minerals within surface mineral accretions.

Just how the Kimberley rock art has been preserved over such long time frames is not well understood. Although the environment is very pristine, the area is subject to flooding and extreme climatic conditions.

Thermoluminescence dating TL is the determination, by means of measuring the accumulated radiation dose, of the time elapsed since material containing crystalline minerals was either heated lava , ceramics or exposed to sunlight sediments. As a crystalline material is heated during measurements, the process of thermoluminescence starts.

Thermoluminescence emits a weak light signal that is proportional to the radiation dose absorbed by the material. It is a type of luminescence dating. Sediments are more expensive to date.

held research positions at the University of Wollongong, Australia, and the National Application of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), thermally transferred OSL dating and characterisation of single grains of quartz.

Quartz has been the main mineral used for optically stimulated luminescence OSL dating of sediments over the last decade. The application of IRSL dating of feldspars, however, has long been hampered by the anomalous fading effect. These procedures have raised the prospect of isolating a non-fading IRSL component for dating Quaternary deposits containing feldspars. In this study, we review the recent progress made on 1 overcoming anomalous fading of feldspar, and 2 the development of pIRIR dating techniques for feldspar.

The potential and problems associated with these methods are discussed. This is a preview of subscription content, log in to check access. Aitken MJ, Thermoluminescence dating. Academic press, London. Google Scholar. An Introduction to Optical Dating. Oxford University Press. London, pp.

OSL dating can be used to determine the time since naturally occurring minerals, such as quartz and feldspar, were last exposed to light within the last few hundreds of thousands of years. It is one of the main methods used to establish the timing of key events in archaeology and human evolution, landscape and climate change, and palaeobiology in the latter half of the Quaternary.

The age is obtained by measuring the radiation dose received by the sample since it was last bleached by sunlight and dividing this estimate by the dose rate from environmental sources of ionising radiation. Past and present research interests span a wide geographic compass, including Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and North America, and topics as diverse as the evolution and behaviour of humans Homo sapiens, Homo floresiensis and Homo neanderthalensis , their response to climatic changes over the past , years, and their interaction with the indigenous fauna and flora.

The OSL dating laboratory is also at the forefront of technical advances in the analysis and interpretation of OSL data collected from single sand-sized grains of quartz, building on the pioneering research of Roberts and Jacobs in this field. The state-of-the-art laboratory consists of separate rooms for the preparation and measurement of quartz and feldspar grains, as well as storage rooms for quarantined material. All rooms are fitted with safelights, similar to a photographic darkroom.

A full range of modern facilities is available to extract and purify quartz and feldspar grains for dating. This laboratory is likewise equipped with state-of-the-art instruments to measure the chemical properties of minuscule samples, such as the individual foraminifera analysed by Colin Murray-Wallace and his team. In this laboratory, individual biomolecules can be identified, extracted and purified for dating, under the direction of Allan Chivas.

CAS recently purchased three new Olympus microscopes for study of artefacts and thin section analysis of minerals and grain size distributions. The new microscopes cater for current research into soil micromorphology and the function of ancient stone, bone and shell tools.

In geomorphology, radiometric dating methods have been on the rise during the past decades. Notably cosmogenic nuclide applications and luminescence dating gained great popularity because they quantitatively capture geomorphic processes on their process-inherent timescales. To date, globally more than 4, in situ detrital catchment-averaged 10Be data are available, forming a highly variable, statistically resilient dataset that represents substantial effort of both capital and labour.

However, published data are often still inaccessible to researchers, are frequently subject to lacking crucial information, and are commonly different in underlying calculation and standardisation algorithms. The cosmogenic radionuclide part of the database consists of 10Be and 26Al measurements in fluvial sediment samples along with ancillary geospatial vector and raster layers, including sample site, basin outline, digital elevation model, gradient raster, flow direction and flow accumulation rasters, atmospheric pressure raster, and nuclide production scaling and topographic shielding factor rasters.

Single-grain optically stimulated luminescence OSL dating of terminal Pleistocene and early Holocene human occupation sites in the Dhofar region of Oman. Lauren Patricia Linnenlucke , University of Wollongong. The Arabian Peninsula is situated within a crossing zone for the movement of pastoralist communities. Current interest regarding the development from hunter-gather to pastoralists is due to the discovery of the Nejd Leptolithic Tradition located within western Oman. The use of Nejd Leptolithic assemblages as an archaeological marker is considered important, as they are only found within Southern Arabia and are considered a defining point in determining when humans transformed into a more prominent pastoralist society.

By examining three Nejd Leptolithic rock shelters within western Oman Ghazal, Khumseen and Al-hatab and providing accurate age estimates using pseudo single-grain optically stimulated luminescence OSL dating to determine the age of the sediments, we were able to provide ages for all three sites. Unless otherwise indicated, the views expressed in this thesis are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of the University of Wollongong.
